Do You Know What's the Worst?

When you pour a bowl of cereal, and all that comes out is the yucky cereal sawdust. Seriously.

And my family has the incurable disease where we can't finish boxes of cereal, and we definitely can't throw away a box that isn't totally empty, so instead, we put the 99% empty box back on the shelf. The worst thing about this disease is that it's genetic. My whole family has it. Which means that I've had a gazillion experiences where I go to eat cereal only to realize my first choice isn't actually available. This happens until someone (usually mom) gets fed up and throws a whole bunch of boxes away.

But that only makes us look like we have no cereal, so dad buys more and it's not very long until we're pouring cereal sawdust into our bowls again.

And seriously, Cheerio sawdust tastes the worst.

I'm with you on that one. But my sister used to wait with eager anticipation for the Rice Crispy box to hit that point. CRAZY! But now I think of her every time I pour that darn cereal sawdust...and it makes me smile.

But I still don't eat it!

I just had a bowl of Life cereal for dinner. But it was freshly opened. Delicious!

If it is genetic then we must have common ancestors down the line!

Hope your running is going well! Are you excited for the race? It's soon!! :-)

Unfortunately I've passed on the gene...

But HONEY NUT cheerio saw dust ain't half bad!

TisforTonya said...

are we related? Because I have THREE boxes of nigh unto empty cheerios that I got fed up enough to toss out this morning!

LisAway said...

Oh, that's because they actually package the Cheerios with real sawdust for cushioning.

Cajoh said...

I have taken the sawdust and used it as ice cream sprinkles— especially frosted flakes. Consider that next time it may actually encourage people to finish the box.

The best part about this post is that you actually ate the Cheerios dust.

My family does this all the time. It drives me nuts. However, they do not just stop with the cereal boxes. It also extends to juice, syrup, and yogurt.

Super!

One Solution... eat Oatmeal!

Just sayin'.

(Milk doesn't mix with my body very well so I perhaps that is why I'm not very sympathetic... maybe next time)

There is good sawdust like from frosted flakes and Life. I think that's because it is just sugar dust. Ummmm . . . sugar.

rychelle said...

i beg to differ.

lucky charms saw dust is the WORST.

All cereal sawdust is nasty. And my kids can't throw it away either.

Elisa said...

You ate it?! That's just wrong.

My husband also has this disease. And I would be the one getting fed up and throwing all the cereal boxes out of the pantry.

janica said...

haha. you crack me up with this post. Cereal sawdust.. your a genius.

Just SO said...

We have the same problem here. But I'm more inclined to throw it away if there isn't enough for a bowl left.

Wow, I always have a hard time thinking of pet peeves and that is a REALLY good one!

Thanks Barbaloot!

Your bad experience served to give me a great answer (for the first time in my life) to the questions "What is your biggest pet peeve?" Yessss!

Also, can I just say that "Kashi Cinnamon Harvest Whole Wheat Cereal" is 20% air, 30% cereal nuggets and 50% cereal sawdust straight out the gate?! It's true! So annoying, but the cereal is so good, we overlook the fact that it's a total rip off and take the hit on our grocery bill every week.

Dang Cinnamon Harvest...

And this is one of the many reasons that I don't love cereal...

If I admitted to not eating cereal, would that make me less of a person because it's unhealthy or because I can't sympathize?

Complete agree on the Cheerios dust. Absolutely disgusting.

Sounds like a vicious cycle. Maybe you should start purchasing your own cereal, that way you have clear control and regulation over what's going on. Just a suggestion.

i hate the moment when i go for the cereal box and it pops off the shelf when i lift it because it's empty when i thought that it would be full. hate that.

i do have to say though, the one cereal that is delicious at the end of the box is life. those sugar crystals? delish.

Mmmmmmm, cheerio sawdust...

We figured out once when we were poor college students that cereal dust makes a good thickener for stew. Unless the cereal was sweetened. IN which case, it made the stew really gross. I wouldn't recommend it, myself, but we got really creative!

I have this problem too...

BTW, I answered your question in my comments...

Cereal sawdust is genius. I've never heard it called that.

Do you have enough "anger" now to go running?

Jillybean said...

My kids do the same thing. We end up with cereal dust all over the place.

R Allen said...

Now that I've put my foot down about that particular habit, the children have started pouring the dust on the floor, then throwing the box away.

Camille said...

I bet I can one up you....nothing is worse than pouring a bowl of raisin bran (two scoops) and realizing your children have snarfed all the raisins, leaving you with the bran.

(maybe that's not as bad as cereal sawdust.)

Buffy Dayton said...

You bunch of lazy heads, just throw the freaking cereal box away!!!! (Joe is sitting next to me trying to justify it, but I think heck with it, just throw the bugger away!!!)

Sara @ Domestically Challenged said...

water bottles. that is it in our house. water bottles that are almost completely empty, and they sit on the counter until I fly into a fit of... me, and they rush to rid the house of them.

My boys love Frosted Mini Wheats sawdust, they'll fight to the death for the last bowl.

Hoggards said...

LOL, I love your random posts! I agree! I HATE the dust at the bottom.

Alyson | New England Living said...

hehehehe! I can relate! Everyone in my family, except me, will not throw out nearly empty boxes of cereal. Actually, they don't even throw out totally empty boxes of anything in the pantry (including my husband). It annoys the crappola out of me!

That Girl said...

Luckily my kids LOOOOOOVE cereal sawdust. With yogurt. Go figure.

(And I'm incapable of throwing away a box. That's My Man's job.)

Shelley said...

At our house no one does that...or so they say. Hey! maybe someone from your place is doing that to our boxes!

Becka Babe said...

Just imagine the babies getting a hold of the cereal box and dumping the sawdust on the floor and walking on it, now that's fun!

annie valentine said...

The worst is when you have three children who DON'T LIKE COLD CEREAL. How does that happen?

Randi said...

mmmm! I like the sawdust from mini wheats. Maybe because it's mostly sugar!

YES - there is nothing worse than cereal sawdust!!
