The Awkwardness That Is My Life

I get called the wrong name a lot. Not sure why---maybe cuz people aren't used to someone my age being called Barbara? Whatever the reason it happens often enough that I usually just respond. I get Deborah and Brenda the most. Even Margaret. But I've also gotten Heather. How that one sounds like Barbara, I'll never know.

The newest one is Laura. But this time, I tried to correct the person calling me that. Cuz we're going on a date. And I corrected him the first time he called me Laura. And the second time. Then I spelled my name out for him when he put my number in his phone. Afterwhich he said, "Okay, I'll call you later, Laura." What? How does B-A-R-B-A-R-A = Laura?

I don't know what to do. I'm pretty sure he's the one that should feel awkward for consistently getting my name wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm the one that's totally uncomfortable about it.

There is a woman who works with another agency we work with, whose name is Barbara. I always figured she was an older woman.

Until I found out she is actually in my best friend's ward, and is my age. I do agree that Barbara is an unusual name for our generation.

I will just start calling you Barbie.

Hmmm. I feel like you should make him feel uncomfortable. Because it is YOUR NAME. He really should work on getting that one (at least) right. But that's just me. . .

Barbie - That is cute for Barbara - although I have several good friends named Barbara and I love that name. Always good people :-D

As for the dude I would just start calling him by another name until he gets your name right!

Wow. That is super awkward. I can't believe you even spelled it our for him and he still got it wrong.

And I'm pretty sure HE'S THE ONE!!! I had to introduce myself to Greg on three separate occasions before he remembered that we'd met before...

But, yeah. That's really weird about the name mix-ups. So you should just sort of answer to anything, I guess.

I'm guessing there won't be a second date ;)

Maybe he just knew u in another life as Laura. Agree with the awkward.

Is it mean of me to say that that dude is a total and complete ding dong?! What the heck?? It's not like Barbara is an unusual name...hilarious.

tag team.

when i see him on sunday, i'll introduce myself and ask who he's going with (or who he went with). then i'll make him feel awkward, by blatantly correcting him.

yes?

I'd start calling him the wrong name. So the awkwardness could be shared.

Please let him call you Laura on the whole date. At some point he'll remember your name is Barbara and it will be HILARIOUS!

It could be worse, he could have called you "Mom:.

Please tell me that you canceled your date with him. And if you went, you called him the wrong name. Thrice.

Maybe you should wear a name tag on your date, and then tell him it's because you like to cater to those of such a low IQ.

I get called Melanie a lot, and people don't even know it's my mom's name. Or people call me Michelle, which is my sister's name, but they don't know that either. PEOPLE ARE STUPID.

Well, if you didn't like him, I say this could be good. When he calls just say "no, Laura isn't here."

If you do like him, well, tell him to get a hearing aid, ask if he knows sign language... I don't know what to tell you Laura.

I had a Bishop when we were first married that called us the Bisons (instead of Beesons). At first he would apologize, then he gave up. Once he even called us the Bisons from the pulpit.

It's funny that Melissa gets called Melanie, because my cousin Melanie would get Melissa. Sometimes by her Mom.

I agree with the other commenter. Call him the wrong name.

I get Melinda.

And on your behalf, I want to veto a second date with this guy.

Haha, poor guy was so flustered and overcome by your beauty. Or maybe he's just not that smart. Either way, have fun on your date!

I thought I got asked out by Ben, a software engineer who described himself as "a computer nerd from Utah County". Nope. That would be GREG- but still a computer nerd from Utah County. No idea where the 'Ben' thing came from but I DID have the good sense to be embarrassed.

Oh- and only after I married 'Ben' did I discover that by introducing himself as "a computer nerd from Utah County" he thought he was telling me he had a good job. I thought he had low self esteem. We were both wrong. LOL!

You just never know. But if this guy can't get the Barbara thing figured out by the date- he's a goner!

My other comment disappeared. Hmmm....

People say my name wrong all the time too. It never stops being awkward. And the more times I have to correct them the more awkward it gets. Hopefully we'll get a post-date blog post since this sounds like something to be shared. ;o)

That was a great post Laura

OH I MEAN Barbara (tee,hee)
Seriously...what's so hard about Barbara. I'd probably be calling you Barb, if we hung out.
And if a guy we are dating is calling you Laura, I think I'd have to throat punch him after a couple of times.
Helllooooooooooo....
Have you thought of wearing a Name Tag??

wendy said...

Oh...and I just remembered something.
When I was in Jr. High.loooong time ago
I had a German friend named
WALTROT (not quite sure of the spelliing but that is exactly how it sounded)
But we called her Barbara, cause her mom said WALTROT is German for Barbara??? (what??)
So
At least you don't have to worry about people calling you WALTROT

There has just GOT to be a way you can use this confusing of names in your favor.....

Haha, that is awesome. Let me know how the date goes! Maybe you should start calling him Manly.

Men are such dorks sometimes! Yeah, he should feel dumb, but was likely oblivious!

Hahahaha! (Duh!)

Maybe it's a sign he's not Mister Right?

Lara Neves said...

It did take me a while to train my husband how to spell and pronounce my name properly. (Of course, he was not my husband at the time.)

That said, I do NOT understand people who are so oblivious to the sounds and letters of the English language that they do this sort of thing. Totally bizarro. I think you should just open the date with a name lesson. Bring a whiteboard and everything. Do not move on with small talk or menu ordering or movie watching or whatever until he can say and spell your name properly ten times in a row! Sheesh!

How serious are you with this guy?

As long as YOU don't get confused about your name, there's no reason to feel uncomfortable.
